Cycling's New Superteam
Words: Keir Plaice | Pictures: Bram Berkien
Cycling has a new superteam.
Team Jumbo-Visma has had an impressive start to the season, winning the first two big classics of the year—Strade Bianche and Milano Sanremo—with Wout van Aert, before leaving a star-studded field gasping for breath at the Tour de L’Ain, where Primož Roglič and his mates beat Ineos’ A-team handily.
Heading into the Tour de France, the Dutch organisation looks as ready as it has ever been to win cycling’s greatest prize. The team, which can trace its roots back to 1984, has made astonishing progress in recent years.
When Rabobank pulled its sponsorship in 2012, it seemed likely that the squad would have to fold. The team raced on without a backer, before finding one in Belkin, which then reneged on its agreement. In 2015, Jumbo stepped in, along with the Dutch lottery for a time, and the organisation was given a new lease of life.
They decided to aim for the very top. No longer would they be satisfied with top-ten finishes and being the best Dutch team. It would be a multi-year project, but they wanted to become the best bike-racing team in the world. From six wins in 2016 to 51 last year, their vision continues to be rewarded.
Some Highlights:
In 2016, Steven Kruijswijk nearly won the Giro. In 2017, Dylan Groenewegen won on the Champs Élysées. In 2018, the team earned three Tour de France stage wins, Steven Kruijswijk finished fourth at the Vuelta, and Primož Roglič won the Tour of the Basque Country and Tour de Romandie. 2019 was the team’s best year yet; Roglič won the Vuelta, Tirreno Adriatico, Tour de Romandie, Giro dell’Emilia, Tre Valli Varesine, and a stage of the Giro, amongst his 16 top prizes, and the team earned four victories at the Tour and placed Steven Kruijswijk on the third spot of the podium.
Tour Roster:
For the 2020 race, Team Jumbo-Visma has one of the very best teams in the world on paper.
Primož Roglič, Tom Dumoulin, Steven Kruijswijk, Wout van Aert, Robert Gesink, Sepp Kuss, Tony Martin, and George Bennett are set to take to the start on August 29 in Nice.
Before the resumption of the season in August, after it was postponed due to the coronavirus lockdowns, Team Jumbo-Visma’s Tour team headed to Tignes, France with a select group of staff for a high-altitude training camp in the Alps.
