It has a small following here.
Small compared to the heartlands of northern Europe. Small compared to other major sports in Catalunya. Smaller compared to other forms of cycling. It’s had a bit of a boost from the popularisation of gravel riding becoming a la moda but it is still the little brother or sister of cycling. The people, though, as often with minority sports, are committed, dedicated and firmly bonded to the sport and each other. It’s perhaps that what makes it such a friendly sport. Each weekend is like a social club re-union. Sure, they race hard, to win or against mates or often just against themselves, trying to better themselves from last year’s course, or the weekend before’s sensation in that race, but they get as much joy from a bite to eat or drink with the same group of mates again.

That is not to patronise ‘cross, nor the events.
There is some serious talent on show. Physically and technically. The course at Gran Premi de Les Franqueses, near Barcelona, was tough on both counts. The ubiquitous steps and planks sections, some serious elevation changes and not a single stretch to get a rhythm going with the park’s fixed paths criss-crossing the course like a minefield of mini obstacles sprinkled everywhere, where on another course there might be a chance to relax for a second. There were two particularly testing drop ins; one at pace, the other very steep into a very tight hairpin into a dusty exit. Both had a high-line and a low-line. The former, you had to ride or you lost too much, the second, many leapt off and scuttled down on foot. On both, many also did fine impressions of Franz Klammer on skis, with legs flailing for balance; some with success, a fair few falling into the hard, dusty soil. No mud. Not even in this (relatively) wet year in Catalunya, not today.

The riders at the top of these races are seriously good, and their approach is reflected by this in their approach, kit and support crews. As with the best ‘cross events, campervans are de rigueur. Maybe they are a little smaller than those in Flanders, but nonetheless, the top racers aren’t amateurs in their approach and the level of support they have in tow is impressive. But it is a small, thinner layer, at the top end. The rest, they love ‘cross but they do it with the support of mates, of family, getting changed in the back of a van or a car, though for others it’s the train network to get them to and from many events.

Here in Catalunya many of the events are in industrial areas of blue-collar towns.
Perhaps not the prettiest suburbs of the most popular towns, but they are often well connected - and invariably have a local cafe ready with good coffee and cakes. What is perhaps different, and certainly is the case with Les Franqueses, is what surrounds and what one can see with the elevation of the course. Climb out of the bowl of the registration area and the start-finish line, up to the top of the course and you are surrounded by the beautiful countryside that embraces the Valles Orientales here; to the north, the Massis del Montseny and the east and south east, the Montenegro i el Corredor. Catalunya is a stunning land and even here, in an industrial centre, one is not far away from that beauty. The beauty of ‘cross is enhanced by the beauty of the wild, juxtaposed against the industrial race HQ.

The race day threatened that much yearned for mud but the early cloud did not deliver.
A "chilly" start in single figures quickly gave way to spectators stripping off jackets, as the sun broke through and made it a bright day in the twenties. Winter sport ciclocross… But, Catalunya’s winter doesn’t really arrive until Christmas, then lasts barely a month. Though of course, winter, is a relative term. But then, so is the appearance of a sport. From the outside, ciclocross appears less important than in other countries or other sports within this land. But to those in it; those who do it and make it run, often in their spare time, it’s as important, fun and rewarding as elsewhere.
There are three more fixtures in the Copa España and six more in the Copa Catalana this year.
