dirty reiver 2018

Way back in late 2017, in the middle of the CX season, I sent an email to the team at Soigneur along the lines of ‘have you heard of the Dirty Reiver’? Not long after I had signed up to ride (and shoot) 200km of gravel in the North of England.
Roll forward 6 months and it’s 5:15am on a Saturday, the sun is coming up and I awake from my limited sleep in the van to get ready to ride. 7hrs 54mins and 125km later I decide that for this edition another 75km would push the cuts off too close. This year I’d settle for the Dirty One Thirty (130km).
The Dirty Reiver takes place in the remote Northumberland National Park, around a town called Kielder, and covers both English and Scottish gravel. The dirty part I got, but I had to look up ‘reiver’ and found it’s a 13th century raider of the English Scottish border. Those who rode the Dirty One Thirty spent around 6km raiding Scottish terrain and the rest in England.
This was the 3rd edition of the Dirty Reiver with around 1000 people signing up to ride.

Northern England is notorious for its inclement weather, add Scotland into the mix and it’s a recipe for a 4 seasons in one day ride. Planning for this means lots of gear, waterproofs, leg warmers, space blankets, food, more food and some extra food. I tried to keep bike weight to a minimum but the fear of blowing up over lack of food, planning for all weathers and carrying camera gear meant my CX bike was coming in pretty heavy. As it turned out the weather couldn’t have been better. The sun was shining all day, it was between 12 and 15 degrees with a light breeze: the perfect gravelgrinder weather.

I’ve spent around 1:15hrs riding and haven’t seen another soul, just me, the gravel and the occasional grouse…. It doesn’t get much better!

The Reiver landscape falls somewhere between the Finnish wilderness and what I imagine Californian gravel backcountry looks like. No more than 5% of the course was on tarmac and as far as tarmac goes its was quiet and scenic. The other 95% was firetracks and genuine gravel. The type of gravel I’ve seen on the plains of North America, dusty with small stones, the type I’ve looked for (and never found) when training in the North of England prior to the Reiver.

The back end of nowhere….. Feed station #1, 67km in, is the first sign of life. It’s nice speak to others and see how people are surviving so far…. The cup of tea is also a welcome treat.

Over the course of the day it became clear that the participants bike of choice was anything from a gravel bike, to CX, to a Mountain Bike and the occasional Fat Bike. Tyre choice for me, and a large number of others was Panaracer (tubeless) Gravel Kings. I’d also decided prior to the race that I wanted to up my gearing for more options, (see end for gear choice) which was smart.

Back to the race
As the day progressed my smile just grew bigger, this really is a fantastic event. Riders are all in the same frame of mind, although some may be looking to come across the finish line first, everyone’s happy to share the freedom and adventure of being somewhere so beautiful and remote. If you’re interested in the numbers: the fastest 130km finisher came in at 4:58:38 and the fastest riders on the 200km crossed the line after 7:09:21.
So, what next….
Dirty Reiver has sparked my enthusiasm for this type of riding and I immediately started looking for similar events, but it will to be hard to live up to Kielder and Northumberland.

I always knew I’d be riding by myself, but it would be nice to have some company for a bit longer, a chance to chat with another rider. So far I’ve met Paul, had a chat, but I find myself stopping to taking pics which means others carry on. Not to worry, a bit more time to my thoughts is fine…. Now where did I put my bag of Haribo!
